Background information on Pacific Island Shipping

There is a limited amount of available data on commercial shipping in the Pacific.

This paper seeks to provide useful background information to the debate on alternatives to the current fossil fuel powered sea transport options.

It is organised into two sections; the first giving general regional information on size, population, economy, development issues, energy dependency, etc. The second gives information on the region’s shipping with an emphasis on Fijian case studies. Information has been sourced from publicly available internet
searches and represents best knowledge available at the time of writing.

We welcome comment, criticism, and especially additional information. Our thanks to those who have provided review of this research to date. We cordially invite others involved in related research or initiatives to share their data and experiences with us. We will attempt to update this paper as additional knowledge and information comes to hand.
