Background information on Pacific Island Shipping

There is a limited amount of available data on commercial shipping in the Pacific.

This paper seeks to provide useful background information to the debate on alternatives to the current fossil fuel powered sea transport options.

It is organised into two sections; the first giving general regional information on size, population, economy, development issues, energy dependency, etc. The second gives information on the region’s shipping with an emphasis on Fijian case studies. Information has been sourced from publicly available internet
searches and represents best knowledge available at the time of writing.
