Sailing for sustainability is an action research experiment. It is exploring the role that sailing and sailing boats can play in the sustainable village of the future. It is the result of some workshops held in the coastal village of Solodamu on the island of Kadavu, Fiji in 2006.

While the village is a leader in community conservation initiatives, there is lack of sustainable income generation.

Like many Fiji (and Pacific) villages, transport infrastructure is limited to bad roads and sea transport. The latter is a choice between small open fiberglass skiffs (fibers) with outboards or large interisland ferries. No-one uses sail power anymore.

Sailing for Sustainability seeks to learn if:

  • A sailing vessel of around 15m capable of carrying 3-4 tonne of passengers and cargo is an economically viable village-based business trading around Kadavu and to the mainland, and
  • Whether one can be built strongly and safely at minimal cost in the village, and
  • If the cruising yachts and their crews that visit Fiji every year can provide a support base of skills, experience and access to resources to help Solodamu in this goal.

About us

redHibiscusredHibiscusWe're an eclectic group of people who probably all would admit to having wanted to be pirates when we were younger (and some of us still do). It all started with Pete and Ali being asked to give some time to the people in Solodamu to help the village plan for their sustainable future. The project just grew and grew (see The Story So Far).

In 2006, Hibiscus III (with Pete, Ali and Jack) anchored off Solodamu. In 2008 Hibiscus III returned (with Spike the trainee cabin boy) with Ratbag (Chris, Tonch, Rachel and Sam) and ***** (Andreas from Germany), a first for Solodamu (three yachts anchored in the bay at the same time).

Solodamu

Solodamu VillageSolodamu VillageSolodamu is a small village of approximately 20 families on the northern coast of Kadavu and 60NM south of Suva. It used to be located behind the mangroves on the coast but following the devastating storm surge in 1959 the Chiefs decided to relocate the village on higher (but rockier) ground. Solodamu takes its name – (literally Red Cliffs) - from the massive bush covered cliffs that turn a ruddy copper at sunset.

Pete's ramblings

fri nite - Tonch, Phil and I put Lia Fal up against some poles yesterday and scraped 3yrs of mussels off the hull - a few weak spots possible, wont know until we haul her out for sure but so far nothing looks too serious. Anodes are still there, probably 1/2 worn down but still fizzing. Prop looks good, turns 360 and seems tight in the bearings. One fizzing nut on the rudder blade. Jack and I attacked the bilges today. Two are going to be hard to get to - under the motor. All other compartments have some surface rust but again nothing too serious yet.

Ratbags sea shantis part one

I’ve traded with the Maoris
Brazilians and Chinese
I’ve courted half-caste beauties
Beneath the kauri trees;
I’ve travelled along, with a laugh and a song,
In the land where they call you mate
Around the Horn and home again,
For that is the sailor’s fate.

Across the Line, the Gulf Stream,
I’ve been to Table Bay,
Around the Horn and home again
For that is the sailor’s way.

End of March

Starting to get the hang of getting around this site. Posted both the reports in "the story so far" - sorry they're a little turgid. When Bart figures out how to post a ppt in there you can have the pictures versions. Hibiscus hauls out tommorrow to have her bum wiped
